1981 USS Midway Cruise Book
By Marc "Devil Dog Of The Web" Iseli / Updated Dec. 2025
USS Midway cruise books are basically the
Navy’s answer to high school yearbooks, except
with more bad haircuts and the guy Revanettes.
These books immortalize every salty dog and
questionable port call from 1945 to 1992,
capturing the glory, the chaos, and the occasional
unauthorized liberty. If you ever wanted
proof that a Navy chief really could rock
a mustache that could frighten small children,
look no further. Veterans drool over these
things like a boot at chow time, and now
you can get your hands on digital scans of
every single one, lovingly preserved as a
PDF for your viewing pleasure. The Marines
weren’t about to let the squids have all
the fun, so they’ve been cranking out their
own cruise books for ages, sometimes even
while still deployed. These days, the publisher
throws the pages up on a website so every
Jarhead can nitpick the spelling of their
name before the thing goes to print.
Scored myself a 1981 USS Midway
cruise book,
straight from the mothership’s
website. I
wrangled all the pages into one
big PDF,
then chopped it into four chunks
so even
the laziest boot can flip through.
VMFP-3
makes a cameo or two, so keep
your eyes peeled
for familiar mugs. If you’re
the type who
collects cruise books like some
folks collect
bad tattoos, the Midway’s got
a whole stash
online. I’ll drop the link below,
don’t say
I never did anything for you.

Alright, you glorious Rat Phixers and Phlyers,
if we ever survived a TAD, a Det, or a BOHICA,
who haven't, and you didn’t think I was the
biggest gaff off in the squadron. Got a sea
story, or some grainy photos your ex didn’t
set on fire, and they’re only slightly illegal?
Send ‘em by email, snail mail, or safety
wire it to a carrier pigeon. I collect ‘em
all, just nothing that would incriminate
me.
