By Marc "Devil Dog Of The Web" Iseli / Updated Dec. 2025
August 1, 1981. Mark it down, because that’s the day MTV stormed the airwaves like a squadron of caffeinated Lance Corporals on payday. Just after midnight, they kicked things off with a battle cry, 'Ladies and Gentlemen, Rock & Roll', and then unleashed a power-chord-fueled guitar riff theme that would haunt every mall, roller rink, and barracks rec room for the next decade. MTV was supposed to be a music video showcase, mostly for new wave bands with more hair product than sense, plus a few rock dinosaurs still lumbering around. Suddenly, you could worship your music heroes without leaving your couch or risking a mosh pit injury. Semper Video, devil dogs.

MTV didn’t just stroll through the '80s; it charged in like a drunken Gunny at a karaoke bar, rewriting the rules of cool whether you liked it or not. The place became a boot camp for future icons, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and Def Leppard, reporting for duty in spandex and eyeliner. By the time hair metal rolled in, MTV was running the show, cranking up the visual chaos until even the most hard-charging Marine would need sunglasses indoors. Pretty soon, you couldn’t tell where the music ended, and the MTV madness began. Welcome to the new chain of command.

What Happened To MTV?

Alright, you glorious Rat Phixers and Phlyers, if we ever survived a TAD, a Det, or a BOHICA, who haven't, and you didn’t think I was the biggest gaff off in the squadron. Got a sea story, or some grainy photos your ex didn’t set on fire, and they’re only slightly illegal? Send ‘em by email, snail mail, or safety wire it to a carrier pigeon. I collect ‘em all, just nothing that would incriminate me.
