Welcome to the double ugly graveyard for at least 16 RF-4B Phantoms. Most are now triple-blade shaving razors in your local supermarket. The 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, or AMARG (but everyone just calls it The Boneyard), is where the Air Force parks its old birds out at Davis-Monthan in Tucson. They’ve changed the name more times than a newbie pilot loses his lunch doing a barrel roll, but it’s still the same sun-baked parking lot for dead jets. Last time I poked around in 2011, only two out of sixteen RF-4Bs were still hanging on. Fast-forward to 2025, and I’d bet my last pouch of Capri Sun, hey, don’t judge, that the rest have been turned into soda cans or razor blades. Kind of a kick in the teeth that we couldn’t even get one RF-4B saved for the USS Midway. VMFP-3 was the longest-running Marine squadron on that boat, but apparently, all we rate are a couple of wing tanks with cartoon eyeballs.
